On July 27th, 28th and 29th 2018, the historical theatre storytelling show, “Too Early for Birds: Brazen Edition” was staged in Nairobi. I loved every moment of it. A few months later, an editor at The Elephant–and phenomenal writer in her own right–Christine Mungai asked if I could share my reflections on the show.
This was my pitch:
“Loosely, my piece would focus on the audaciousness of three women writing a show of this scale and its contribution to normalizing boldly centering women and their experiences and narratives. I would like to add historical context and include as many women-focused theatre shows (protagonist, story, theme) that have been staged in Kenya. I would also examine any possible gaps or missed opportunities in the show.”
